House Majority Whip, Steve Scalise and apparently two of his aids were shot this morning in Alexandria, Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C. Rep. Roger Williams was reportedly taken away on a stretcher but he was not shot. Reports indicate that the gunman was reportedly using a rifle and was taken out by a security detail. He is either dead or in police custody at this time. Members of congress were participating in an early morning baseball practice.
The gunman was around the third base area behind an oak tree and Scalise was at second. It’s too early to know whether Scalise was the intended target. According to Sen. Rand Paul who witnessed the incident, multiple shots, approximately 50-60 rang out and the gunman reloaded. He stated that if it were not for the security detail, it would have been a “massacre”. Five people have been transported to the hospital at this time.
According to an interview on Fox News, Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla. stated that “he left just before the shooting. As he walked to his car, a man asked DeSantis if it was Republicans or Democrats practicing. About three minutes the shooting began…”. This story is developing. Read more
